Nigger or Nigga, what’s the difference? Nah, really?
Before I begin, please allow me to say, this is not my attempt to intellectualize the use of the N-word. I personally think that’s an oxymoron in itself. Instead I’m more interested in obtaining clarity in our usage of the word by asking how do we intelligently make an argument that nigga differentiates from nigger? Nigger or nigga, I ask, “What’s the difference”?

Nigger is defined as “a black person, a member of any dark skinned people, a person of any race or origin regarded as contemptible people, inferior, ignorant, etc.” Nigger is also defined as “a victim of prejudice similar to that suffered by blacks; a person who is economically, politically or socially disenfranchised.” While nigga, on the other hand, is defined as “an extremely offensive name for a Black person; only a Black can call a Black a nigga.” The latter of the definition is what we “black folks” have attempted to institute into doctrine. We’ve attempted to do it by stating that “nigga” is not the same as “nigger.” Instead, “nigga” is a word of endearment according to many of us. And we’ve indoctrinated it into our culture simply by substituting the ‘er’ in the word nigger with an ‘a’ as if that changes the definition. Damn.
We have all heard the argument, if not participated in it ourselves, “I said nigga with an ‘a’ not the ‘er’.” I ask, what’s the difference? If you honestly consider the African American vernacular, which by the way, reference books have been created for translation and application, most of our words that end in ‘er’ we substitute with an ‘a’. And of course, this obviously changes the spelling of the word, but purposely the meaning of the word stays in tact. For example, gangster is now pronounced and written as gangsta, but is it defined differently? We’ve seen the word murder pronounced and written as murda, but again do the definition of the original word change? There are a slew of words that this is applicable to, for the sake of space, I’ll just print a few. (you may not be able to find our pronunciation of these words in a standard dictionary, but nevertheless we use them)

With all of the words being said, we commonly substitute ‘er’ with an ‘a’ but the meaning stays the same except when we say the word nigger. How could that possibly be? We need to realize that’s an asinine argument.
One of my favorite rappers of all time, Mr. Tupac Shakur, is credited for creating the acronym for NIGGA, which stands for “never ignorant getting goals accomplished.” With all due respect to Mr. Shakur and his family, how is that definition applicable to our people and our community? I know that the attempt was to take a word with a negative connotation and definition and do the inverse, but that’s practically impossible especially in this case. Consider those of us who are “getting goals accomplished” minus the ignorance, do we define or refer to ourselves as nigga’s? Or how about those who are “getting goals accomplished” from selling drugs, hustling or living a particular lifestyle that leaves them uninformed, unaware and uneducated about the world, would they consider themselves “never ignorant”?
Nigger is what nigga is. There’s no getting around it. Consider this, the word nigger is defined the same in more then thirty different languages throughout the world. Regardless of how it’s pronounced the definition stays the same. Regardless of how it’s written, the definition stays the same. Except in our community where we’ve tried to erase and embrace. Erase the word in its original context and embrace it in our own, by simply substituting an ‘er’ with an ‘a’ and giving it an acronym and a new definition. I mean, we’re some bad folks (bad meaning good of course), but damn, how did we do that?
Even with using the acronym, never ignorant getting goals accomplished, who would knowingly define themselves as such? Even Tupac wasn’t a nigga. Like many of us, I’m sure he was called one on several different occasions, but that’s not who he was. Ask his mother. Or better yet, ask yours. Can you imagine a child asking a parent “am I a nigger?” And the parent respond by saying, “yeah, but you’re the one with an ‘a’ not an ‘er’.” How intelligent is that?

Technically there is no difference, but since the word will NEVER go away we must run down the word and change its meaning so it won’t hurt is as much as it was originally intended to when made. Nigga is a word of embrace nowadays to spin the original meaning and use it for more power. Nigger is obviously the negative aspect and is what it is. Someone usin the word Nigga is using the N word in a more positive light with more positive intentions versus someone using the word Nigger has more negative intentions and has more negative light as is being used to breakdown an individual mentally. Bottom line is it builds up the immunity of the minority community so the white community won’t have as much leverage and power over us mentally like they used too.

I was just trying to explain that to my wife the other day, we give to much power to that word. I understand the history of the term and why it is an issue today. But we as black people need to move on fo’ real, just let it go. I’m a 25 year old business professional, who took what Pac said and ran with it. Education you self, set goals, and go after them.

I do believe both words are on in the same unlike Niger and Nigeria… but the truth is the basis for this to be is the american version of english were we have laws to be broken all the time (y= sometimes I, read/read = future/past tense, etc)

Both words mean the same exact thing. When Richard Pryor was using it to joke around he was using the stronger meaning to get across a softer concept that could would make the audience laugh- shock value. If nigga REALLY IS less harmful than nigger why do we get equally as pissed when a white person says it.

“Nigger” or “Nigga” both display negativity when being used. We as black people must learn to address each other properly and not the way others expect us to behave. Both are words used to describe an “ignorant people.” There is nothing positive about either word. Don’t forget your past. When you forget it’s easy to allow those events to happen again. Too many of our forefathers have died because of the word and too many of our children today are dying because of the word. “Nigger & Nigga” represent another way of mental oppression. i am a man who is white (not no ‘cracker’), and i have never called a man who is black the ‘n word’, that is a hatefull word/message that should of been deaded hundreds of years ago. I enjoy hip-hop music and culture, but this doesn’t mean i say ‘yo’ or ‘whatup dog’. i like saigon, of course 2pac, jay-z, nas, slim shady, papoose when he not rapping about his ‘fitted hat low’. i understand why the word has been flipped around, and realise it is not for the youths like myself, so anybody who reckons i am still racist, jump off a cliff or read a book or something.

I believe the words “nigger” and “nigga” both mean the same thing. I used to find it offensive when white people address me with the word “nigger” and black people address me with the sugar coated word “nigga”. Now, however when either race use the word to address me I ignore the person whether they are black or white and consider them a “nigger/nigga” because I know that I am not the word that they are calling me. I’d rather have someone call me their “homie”.

There is no difference with the word. Some may try to interpret it differently but its root is still Nigger. There are white racist people in the KKK that laugh now because of how we use the word. They say that they no longer have to call us Niggers because they got us to use it on each other. Obviously they laugh because like it was said either way you twist the word it will stil mean the same thing.

Nice piece. I wish this word would just die… but it doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen anytime soon. One thing: When I hear someone pronounce that word fully… saying it so it’s grammatically correct, with the “er”… it always makes me cringe. Cus no one says it that properly unless they’re trying to hurt you. I’ve actually never heard anyone say “nigga” in a really hurtful way. When someone is trying to be a racist asshole and cause pain, that’s when motherfuckers start speaking proper English all of a sudden and the “er” busts out. I see a difference… even though none of us should be using either “version.”
The Bottom line is that there is no difference between the word “nigger” and the dumbed down word “nigga”. I consider whoever uses the word for another person, reguardless of their race is a “nigger/nigga”. Nigger and Nigga is the same word. Take the root of the 2 words which is Nig, the definer is ga and ger. A black man cannot call another black man nigga.
I am a black man I have put an end to family or friend from using the word nigga around me. It is ignorant young black men who think nigga is an enduring word. These young black men need to get a dictionary and look up these words and educate yourself. Peace!
