Jay-Z Steps Down As President Of Def Jam, What Letter Grade You Would Give His Performance?

CIMG1605

Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter will step down as Def Jam Records president when his contract expires this year, he and Universal Music Group announced today (Dec. 24). The rapper will continue to record for Roc-A-Fella, the label he co-founded in 1996, which is part of the Universal-distributed Island Def Jam Music Group.

He added, “It’s time for me to take on new challenges. I am pleased to have had the opportunity to build upon the Def Jam legacy, helping to move the company into a new era of artistic success.”

The Day That Jay-Z, Thought He Could Do Dame Dash’s Job

was the day that Roc-A-Fella ended. ROC was great because each member was good at what he/she did. But Jay is not really that experienced running a multi million dollar record label.

I’m Still A Fan Though!!!

One things for sure he is a great mc and he shouldnt quit if he makes a new album it will be his best ever imo cus the mcs that helped him lose his presidency will be scared what he is going to do next. I predict Takeover part 2. LOL

Sounds like his contract wasn’t renewed. LA and them knew he wasn’t worth the cake - at least they had the decency to let him save face with that “steps down” line before showing him the door.

As for Jay’s job in the corner office…meh. He basically did what any other exec at any other label would do; push the safe/easy to sell acts (Jeezy, Rick Ross, Riahanna) and let more challenging acts (The Roots, Freeway, Peedi Crack, Joe Budden etc) sit on the shelf or flop.

B grade…

He had the highest selling artist of the year in Kanye. He broke new artists like Jeezy, Rick Ross, Rihanna, and Ne-Yo. He gave Fabolous a second wind. Luda did very well and got a hit single with Playaz Circle. Dream got a hit single as well. Juelz Santana did well. He signed hot talent like Uncle Murder, The Roots, Tru Life, and Sam Scarfo. Also, Jay did well with his own project as always.

At the same time, he dropped the ball on several artists like Nas, LL Cool J, Freeway, Ghostface, and Beanie Sigel. However…as of recent years, all of those artists have been low to moderate sellers before Jay-Z’s involvement. Def Jam had layoffs which is definitely not a good look.

I think ppul are quick to target him because he’s best known as a rapper. Also, ppul didn’t think he was ready for that level of executive responsibility going from being head of an imprint label (Rocafella) to a major. If you disregard those preconceptions and consider the industry slump you will see that he did quite well overall.

I really believe that the reason why artists like the Roots and Method Man don’t sell cuz the south has dumbed everything down so much and downloading albums 4 free. People don’t know what real hip hop is anymore. Everybody is on Lil Wayne’s nuts not sayin he is not nice but overrated. LL has been done, he just can’t figure that out and to have 50 executive-produced is a dumb move. you’re an OG in thr game lettin urself get sonned by the new kid on the block. shameful.

Smarten up brother , i know common sense is not common but i like to use it. opnions are not facts and according to facts n numbers Jay Z was succesful is his years as president than all Presidents of Major Hip Hop labels including JIMMY , DIDDY ,LILES, FIDDY n the rest, so i dont know where some of yall get these opinions from. Don’t let your stupidity overpower you. i’m not tryna kick knoledge but some of us here are juss way too dumb n childlike. If u juss hate Jay Z coz he is 10 times better than your favourite rapper n you gonna use that to justify what you say about Jay Z then to me your are a sole loser n a sad one. people need to mature and give concrete opinions if they are to. Even if they were promoted better LL , Meth , Roots n all them cats weren’t gonna sell shit. the music business has changed n thats why Jay Z left Def Jam coz they dont wanna fund n find new ways of promoting music n helping artists sell, then u blame Jay for brothers flopping ? Yall niggas need to understand the fact of the matter than juss making weak assumptions because you doing than juss to make youself look more dumb n stupid in the eyes of your own consciousness.

People blame Jay too much……He was President….which means he approves deals and other functions revolving on the business stands. There are many people in play that are the work force behind an artist’s promotion . Most artist that don’t sell, simply do not appeal to the listeners….can’t blame 1 or 2 people for an artist not going platinum. There are so many factors as play.

For example, LL Cool J (a rap vet) was the biggest dissapointment in blaming Jay……LL was not selling wayyyyyyy before Jay came into that chair and he will continue not to sell after Jay’s depature.

People just need a subject to blame……in this case Jay. I hardly heard anyone blame LA Reid….interesting.

Jay should get a B- to B (Thats good)

B

Def Jam has been the most consistent label, besides Interscope, for a couple of years in terms of hip hop.

A lot of people keep bringing up artists that haven’t sold since the 90s or never sold at all. NOBODY SELLS NOW. Look at what American Gangster has sold. Do you expect a label to spend just as much money to promote LL Cool J as much as Jay, when LL’s last 5 albums have flopped? Hell no. Expect Def Jam to go right back to lameless as it was previously.

Expect him and Beyonce to form a label, considering she’s done with her contract with Columbia.

What the fuck has any of the artist complaining ever done for anybody Redman has not made anybody successful when he was hot, LL hasnt, Budden hasnt, DMX didnt do anything for the Ruff Ryders but make himself platinum, Method Man was the most successful Wu-Tang act and he aint do nothing for any of them he ran off with Redman all these rappers are fucking selfish bastards. They got Hov out of his presidency so they still will go triple brick!

Its funny. I think Jay z made Def Jam an off they CAN refuse on purpose. They don’t appreciate him. And that’s what he wants…cause its not about money. Def Jam was one of the few labels that made money and awards. He introduced niggas…Rick Ross, Jeezy..and put out Rihanna Kanye..great pick ups…fabolous Jadakiss etc. Jay did good to be a rapper.
Jay z said it. “When Lyor had Jay z droppin twice a year…He was considered a genius Jay z would be stupid not to drop an album…he makes better albums than LL.

that’s true about hov using outside sources to get his albums poppin. American Gangster (obviously from the movie) and Kingdome Come(dude was gettin promotion from beer commercials people promoting his video too “show me what you got”. I swear 50 got everbody thinking oh Jay used all the marketing money for def Jam, see who’s gonna sell first week of Dec.( Ghostface etc.) people over talking hella shit like they really know the marketing plans of def jam. yall just looking like a bunch haters that don’t thoroughly know what the fuck yall talkin about. PEOPLE YALL MUST OF FORGOT, JAY-Z GOT HIS OWN MONEY FROM ROCAFELLA, ROCAWEAR, 40/40 ETC. so jay doesn’t really need to piggy back off Def Jam like that. plus he got his six figure salary( I’m assuming this cause that’s crazy if def jam payinem millions to do what he do.) 50 got people hating on Jay cause it’s a G-unit/ Rocafella competitiveness going on cause of Kanye when he outsold 50 and when Jay joined Kanye on 106 and park which 50 was buggin off of cause attention was more on the Roc that night.all 50 had was Yayo not even Timbaland or Justin.plus LL’s complainin where I can’t knockem he got points to his view, but Joe Budden lookin unsavvy as ever( he’s talking like rappers in the 90’s before they got savvy) duke still don’t know what time it is on how this matrix work.(if the higher ups on the father record labels (universal, warner)choose to invest in you cause they got the got million dollar budgets, like it’s nothin, it’s the way it is.It’s what the politics choose, not cause LL, 50 and Joey said so. they got yall gassed up, but Joe Budden still don’t get it.

stop naming people like redman.method man, freeway, beans, bleek, teirra marie, joe budden and dmx
these rappers dont sell records any more period, nobody wants to spend money on them and dmx aint even on defjam.
if ya’ll like dmx so much why u aint buy his album becuz of jayz?
he traded dmx and scarface for nas, he traded musiq soulchild for fabolous.
those artist havent sold alot in recent years. hiphop is dying and records aint selling thats not jayz fault.
those who hate jayz just hate jayz
i aint making excuses for him, but those rappers record sales arent his fault not at all
they old washed up dont have a fan base or fell off.

D

he gotta get a bad grade cuz def jam dont want his ass no more. i know he didnt get fired, but if he was good at what his job was they woulda made sure his ass didnt go nowhere. the way they figure it, they can pay someone who doesnt want that much money, an aspiring young nigga like diddy was back in the day, and that nigga will do a better job for way less money. niggas at the office in def jam is sayin it in all the interviews, quotes yall seen like “jay is never at the office” “jay dropped the ball on _________ album” “jay gets paid too much to do what he does”…..no way he gets a good grade. u can talk about the good shit he did, but the bad outweighs the good. have u ever had a boss that never was around and shit was all fucked up at your (street, job, school, etc)? would yall give your boss a good grade? hell no. this is the same situation. big up to jay and im sure he’s going to do his thing wherever he goes, but the spotlight was on that nigga the whole time he was the president and its a lotta people that was dissapointed in that nigga. in the long run it will probably be looked at as a failure, not only because of shit that was goin bad at the label, but the complaints, the fact that he was droppin albums while he was the president, and that nigga only had the job for 2 years. not that its all jays fault, but when a team does bad theres always a front office change, even tho its the players thats fuckin up. maybe this will motivate niggas at def jam to come out wit better music. nowadays, niggas need to make sure every track on the album is the best track on the album if they wanna put up big #’s. no half ass music allowed

I’d give an A-. The hits are undeniable. The bricks are critical. But all, Ludacris, Kanye, Nas, Jeezy, Ghostface, Fabolous, ..i could go on. I mean, The Roots, Methodman, Freeway. They have never gone platinum. Do the research (minus Methodman with Redman or WuTang or haha, Limp Bizkit). haha.

please look at the job the music industry has done and I would say compared to what other labels have done during his tenure….A-/B due to the fact that every label is gonna have flops (yes even interscope does to) but if you look at the albums he ex-produced he’s and really had hands on work in they’ve done pretty well….and honestly speaking L.A reid is the reason Def Jam is going R

Oh F@ck That!!! wrote on December 26th, 2007 at 4:27 pm

All you Jay-Z fans need to shut the fuck up and learn how to ead and listen. That nigga didn’t “step down”, his PR put that SPIN on it. It’s called getting fired and the rumors that he will be fired have been out for a least a year. He and Beyonce just pay A LOT of money to all the right publicists to control the media like all big celebrities. I can’t WAIT till the truth REALLY starts comming out about this dude, but no one will probably listen cuz he has so many under his media spell lol.

For the record, LL don’t give a fuck if HE ever sells again, he was just trying to be the voice for the little people. Who would want to stand around and watch the house that they helped build with their own hands crumble without a word? But, since you all think of Jay-Z is a “God MC” or better yet, just a GOD you all didn’t hear what LL was saying. You all are worse than the Jewish media trying to take down Will Smith for saying something that makes a lot of sense.

JAY Z IS A RAPPER, NOT A BOSS!!! And he hasn’t had a DOPE ASS album since The Blueprint. Since then, everything he has dropped been mediocre at best. His OWN rap career is still sailing off the hype of Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint and Hard Knock Life Vol 2 cuz those are the ONLY mentionables in his catalogue of 7 or 8 albums IMHO.

None of the artists that complained are expecting to go platinum in THIS industry when superstars like Jay, and 50 are struggling to go platinum. Hell, why do you think Detox hasn’t dropped? Dre doesn’t know if he wants to re-enter this fuckin industry. It’s bullshit and no one knows what good music is, but the expectations for him are still there.

But when your BOSS drops an album in the 4th quarter 2 YEARS IN A ROW after retiring and you have an album that isn’t being properly promoted GOOD OR NOT then WTF are you supposed to feel like? And some of these dudes came from Rocafella and didn’t learn their lesson there and repeated the same unsuccessful patterns at Def Jam under the SAME FUCKIN DUDE. That is not loyalty, that is just plain STUPID. Jay only looked out for Jay on The Roc and wouldn’t even SIGN someone who he thought even had the potential to be better artist than him ie Dame signed Kanye West as an artist, so WTF did they think was gonna happen when they dropped the Roc and were souly on Def Jam with dude?

Jay is a master manipulator. He only deals with people he can convence and believe he is smarter and trust that he knows better than they do. People who believe he is a genius. He is NO genius. He just learns faster and learned EARLY how to surround himself with the right people. Jay was already a grown man when Reasonable doubt dropped and that makes a HUGE difference in the learning curve he posesses too. He even has Beyonce saying “he is so smart” but she is brick dumb and we all know it so you have to consider the source LMAO. People WAKE UP. This dude gets an FF. And I don’t think he should take any credit for Rick Ross cuz he was already a well known ghostwritter and Ne-Yo wrote HITS before Def Jam so they don’t count. They were obvious signees.

Scott Skiles got fired, not getting a contract renewed isnt getting fired. When you ask for a specific dollar amount and your employer refuses then terms cannot be met, thats it. But fuck the legal talk, im sure he wont need to collect unemployment anytime soon.
