Alicia Keys Thinks, "Gangsta Rap," Was Created To Make Blacks Kill Each Other

aa91

The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter tells Blender magazine: “‘Gangsta rap’ was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other. ‘Gangsta rap’ didn’t exist.”

“the bicoastal feud between slain rappers Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. was fueled “by the government and the media, to stop another great black leader from existing.”

Full Story

I think Gangsta rap was created from people conveying the struggles they went through or seen in their environment. I don’t think the government is behind the deaths of Tupac & Biggie either.

shutup bitch; No one is forcing anyone to kill each other over music. How can you be a great leader, if your a follower to gangsta rap, and you let it dictate what you do, and cause you to kill others. It’s motherfucking music, if you let it control you, you are nothing but an ignorant follower yourself.

i mean gangsta rap came from the hood, the ghotto, which governments created, and pumped crack, guns, and liquor into. which led to disenfranchised youths needs a vice and a forum to express their frustrations. so in that sense she has a point
but between big and pac, i believe government and media did fuel that fire but, i blame pac for not recognizing that he was a leader and that he was falling right into the anti hiphop pocket by fueling this fire which was 50% pac and 50% suge knight. they were paperchasing the best way rappers know how and i led to his death. i think suge had pac hypnotized by that paper and when pac started to seem like he was waking up from his death row phaze suge had him murked so he could keep selling his music
i wont judge alicia based on these comments alone, i thought she was a smart girl

Gangsta rap is definitely something that record labels and mainstream media love. It sells and it makes black ppl look like a bunch of idiots. The image of the black man in media is a violent crazy oversexual person with no respect for women. Those are stereotypes that every gangsta rapper live up to and that’s why mainstream media love gangsta rap. Many young black kids growing up also copy these fools and think it’s cool to be a gangsta and not speak properly. That’s how you act black. These images brainwash many young black kids to think we have to look and act like a bunch of ignorant punks, drop out of school..etc and if we don’t do that, then we are selling out and acting white. Mainstream media love to promote gangsta rap to the masses big time so everybody can see what black ppl are all about and for some reason we love these images of ourselves. It’s a way to promote black on black crime. Media decided to promote this gangsta stuff in the 90s. It’s been going on for such a long time that it’s difficult even today for a rapper to get respect and signed unless he’s somewhat of a gangsta, with streetcred. The image is in many cases more important than being a skilled rapper. That’s why most topics in rap songs are about killing people, hoes and material things, and therefore you have many fake gangstas who act a certain way to get respect. That way of acting is an ignorant way of carry yourself that will only lead you to prison (When keepin it real goes wrong) or an early brutal death. Just like the white man wants.

Black man you’re doing exactly what the white man and mainstream media want you to do. Act like a gangsta and kill your own people. That’s how you’re being a real nigga.

Cosign The County of Kings. @ Thelonius Monk, I live in L.A and what most people don’t know (including Alicia Keys) is that when “gansta rap” came on the scene the murder rate droped, gang violence droped, crack sells droped, etc. I can only speak for L.A where “gangsta rap” came from. Black people are not mindless robots that do whatever a song says, thats rediculous. The problem is that a person black white chicano asian whatever race that is living in the hood does not have a lot of options so they are forced to get that money and get their love from negative situations, ie Gang bangin for the love or dope dealing and robin’ for money.

I agree with Alicia. Im sure there is a correlation between the hike in “gansta rap” popularity and the increase in black on black violence. That gansta rap shit made it cool to pick up guns and shoot people. Yea violence was there before NWA and the rest but it wasnt such an epidemic.

The media definitely fueled the tupac and biggie feud

21.

and btw the government is partially to blame because if the government reached into the hood and made conditions better then the stories that “gangsta rap is based on wouldn’t exist

A little known fact is that Dick van Dyke and Cary Grant, led by Frank Sinatra, developed this scheme. After inventing Rap music over a period of months in the early 1970s, they knew that they needed a national leader to implement the plan, after succeeding in placing Ronald Reagan in the White House in ‘81, Sinatra and his henchmen succeeded in fully introducing Rap to the black community. The rest is history….

Did you know that it was the C.I.A. who instigated them and caused that shit? I recommend people to watch Slippin or go read some real knowledge since you don’t know shit. Alicia Keys is wrong about the Gangsta Rap concept but the government did cause all of shit that’s still affecting us today.

WHITE BREAD........CHICAGO wrote on April 13th, 2008 at 7:34 am

In certain cases Alicia Keys is right, i mean gangsta rap to me define one of the true meaning of people killing each other lyrically physically and personally. i also think gangsta rap represent violence in a big way. but i don’t think it was made for only blacks who thought that it was made for them to kill each other i think it an all around thing. and to me that the image and character that these rappers act out and portray themselve to be, they lyrically would destroy each other then lyrical turns physical until somebody end up dead. i mean what positive massege does gangsta rap has and what helpful lesson does gangsta rap teaches us beside the violence and the brutality that they promote on TV nothing, so for me to diss Alicia keys for having her own opinion would be wrong. but my whole thing is why would she talk down on a certain type of music if she doesn’t listens to it, or if she never grow up listening to it. i mean if you don’t listen to gangsta music then don’t speak on it like you know what your talking about, like for example i don’t listen to rock&roll music. but wouldn’t it be wrong if i made a comment and said rock&roll was created to make gothic people brake there electric guitars sniff cocaine drink blood paint there faces piers there bodies and having drug related sex.

What’s up with all you assholes believing all this conspiracy theory crap about 9/11? He may not be a very good president but I seriously doubt he killed 5000 innocent people all in an elaborate plot to take over the world.

If she’s saying that media exploitation of gangsta rap’s violent content ignites more reactionary violence in the black community, that’s plausible. However, I think it is too simplistic to view gangsta rap as the killing method. The building blocks for gangsta rap’s content are real causes for black community violence such as guns, drugs, poor education, police brutality and profiling, and poverty.

Just look at what kind of impact gangsta rap has, I mean of course, in some terms people rap about what they went through and everything, but at the same time, it works like a defence mechanism. Feel me? Like if you Gangsta rap is a bad type of genre and has a bad impact on people, then people who support will tell you that it’s all about what gangsta rappers went through.

Why in the world would “whitey” want you to be killing yourselves and commiting crimes and doing drugs and robbing and dropping out of school and going to prison? Please. Cut that nonsense. I don’t know any “whiteys” that want lots of crime, violence, and ignorant people. Perhaps there is a bit of feeding into your own theories? Most SANE people want a peaceful existence to raise a family and aren’t plotting to “hold a brother down”. I’d rather my neighbor be black and responsible than white and a thug. Matter of fact, if my neighbor is responsible, I don’t care one way or the other what their skin looks like.

Geez. You get civil rights and then realize that you are now completely responsible for yourselves, on your own and what? You start jacking each other? And that is “whitey’s” fault? WTF?

Are you that far gone, that hypnotized by your own media and conspiracies? Crack is from the gov’t., poverty is from the gov’t., gangs are from the gov’t., AIDS is from the gov’t., Tupac and Biggie were killed by the gov’t., violence is from the gov’t., illiteracy is from the gov’t., people being put in jail for committing crimes is because of that damned gov’t.,…what else? What else is there about the black culture that the gov’t is so enamored with destroying? Oh, I also know what you really mean when you say “gov’t.”-AKA white people. Aren’t you getting tired of hearing this same rhetoric about blaming everyone else except yourself?

Gangsta Rap at one time was a unique poetic release. The fact that it has been perpetuated for over two decades into a shallow, money-making scheme with dire social consequences plays more into the lack of personal responsibility and social participation than any government conspiracy(true or not) could hope to achieve. If you still listen to the garbage, bopping to the insidious bounce in your car like a guilty pleasure, don’t be blaming any ghost-like gov’t. masks.

If you know it, why do you do it?

i think that when the public eye see
rappers and hear their music
it is easy to think that all things associated with rap
including style, artists, etc…
they believe and think that its all about violence
however they are many that are doing their side job whether it be gangs, drugs, pimpin, or whatever it maybe
i dont believe that the government is causing black violence
i think that these people grew up in a certain environment and have a new celebrity life style and it’s hard to leave that behind b/c they are afraid, or dont want to be called whimps or they are just power tripping
however the govt & the people in the news
due tend to twist things around and take advantage of the situation
but to me, rap is just a way of expressing one’ self and culture
now when it gets personal it can get out of hand between one artist to another, it becomes a matter of proving themselves vs who wants to be the bigger person
now for alicia to say that then that’s just crazy
whatever the violence may be it is still wrong
and families and friends are still suffering from it
not to mention that we have innoncent black people that are getting hurt just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time or just for being around these artist
i think its time that we take responsibility and do the right thing
even if that were true, SHOULDNT WE BE TRYING TO MAKE THINGS BETTER INSTEAD OF POINTING THE FINGER AT ONE ANOTHER
AS AN ARTITST, AND A ROLE MODEL SHE SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT HOW TO MAKE CHANGES, NOT BRING UP STUPID POINTS THAT’S ONLY GOING TO CAUSE DIVERSITY AND ANGER

how can the government give us aids
when we are the one’s who are having unprotected sex and endangering our generation
how is that the government?
they also provide condoms, GOD, spirituality
and let’s not forget common sense

Mr Daye wrote on April 14th, 2008 at 6:38 pm

The government does not admisister aids……but if you put poison in a fish tank you dont have to feed it to each and every fish.
The oldest argument in the book is that blacks need to take responsibility for their actions, but that is not the only place the responsibility lies. You have to look at what caused those actions in the first place..poverty, drugs, violence LOW SELF ESTEEM, and a lack of our own cultural understanding that makes it possible for us to believe that a Black man should act like “This” while a Black Woman acts like “this”
Plus if you l;ook at our youth, black males especially, when their role models are incarcirated, or sell coke or do whatever, and they dont have anyone to look at and say ” Oh….thats how a black man acts….” their interpretation of what it takes to be a black man in this society is completly destroyed.

You guys can think on that one for a bit….I have yet to see a valid rebuttal from my last comment…

Oh yea….I write rhymes too, dont get it twisted

RE:Mr Daye

Who is driving around neighborhoods flashing money at kids to tell horror stories about their lives?

I can give you an answer. Their friends, their uncles, the local tough guy gangbanger droppin rock for greens. That’s who. How is that the gov’ts fault? Who is leading these kids to positive avenues?

You write rhymes, you say. How many gov’t agents or record execs in on the “conspiracy” have approached YOU and asked you to make up stories about living thug life, treating women like recepticles, and getting a flashy platinum grille for street cred…maybe take a bullet in the shoulder too? How many? Ten, two, none?

I think maybe YOU’VE got it twisted. Certain people want to sell out for the money so it is THEY who approach the record companies with what is selling. There’s obviously no derth of one-hit gangsta tracks. You think record execs are roaming around beggin kids on the street to act a certain way and tell a certain story? And somehow record execs are tied to some secret gov’t. mafia designed to give black America “low self-esteem”?

Insert laugh track now.

trying to prove she is black wrote on April 14th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

point blank, alcia keys is misinformed and tellin’ your fans something like that is dangerous.

the truth of the fact is that black on black crime existed well before “gangsta rap” and the fact is that the sole reason we have “gangsta rap” is because the story on black on black crime and police brutality and street poverty, and drugs flooding the inner-cities was left untold….that side of life was completely ignored

the truth of the fact is that the “gangster rapper” were the 1st true “conscious rapper” because he or she were telling from 1st hand accounts the things going on in the streets without sugarcoating it…

the blame of its exploitation should be directed towards the industry itself, however the hiphop as a whole is exploited…and the only thing the politicians are concern about in regards of the music is how can they use this to gain the conservative vote….

*returns to listening to cube’s “gangsta rap made me do it”*

To the Hip Hop Nation,

Please do not dismiss Ms. Keys comments. You need to educate yourselves to the history of governmental conspiracy against Black America. We have been enslaved, disenfranchised, villified, and marginalized by the elite classes in America since 1619. The new phase of this treatment began shortly after the movie Birth of A Nation was viewed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1917. Since that time the governement has viewed Black Americans as a dangerous subculture that could be exploited by foreign countries against the USA. Several conterintellegence efforts have been waged against Black upward mobility. It would not surprise me in the least to find out 30 years from now that what is being stated to be true in some shape form or fashion.

As documentation of what I have said I suggest the following books and video.

Books:
The Murkin Conspiracy
Murder In Memphis
The Judas Factor: The Malcolm X Assassination
Racial Matters:The FBI’s Secret Files on Black America
The FBI and Martin Luther King
Dark Alliance: The CIA and Crack Cocaine

Video:
Bastards Of The Party(The Best doc on the Blood/Crip War and the BLP)
Slippin
Conspiracy: Who Killed DR. King
The MLK Assassination
All Power To The People: The Black Panther Party and Beyond

Let’s stop the disinformation that is occuring and get the brothers on the streets armed with the true knowledge to be able to defend ourselves and our nation.

I give it to you mule funk(and consequently, Mr Daye). You spew out book names to sound learned, but what have you read on the other side? If nothing, that doesn’t make you learned, it makes you a sheep.

You know, there are conspiracy theories that an elite group of people with no allegiance to any country are really controlling the entire world stage and that even our leaders are mere pawns. There is a conspiracy theory that these people send planes into the sky to dump millions of tons of toxic gases (called “chemtrails”…look it up) into the atmosphere to control the climate and to kill off 80% of the world’s population. There is a conspiracy theory that this group wants to horde all the resources for themselves and their lineage, and there is even a conspiracy theory that these people are not even people but extra-terrestrial beings.

You believe that crap too?

How come nobody talks about any conspiracy when the Fresh Prince became Will Smith the mega-movie star? Why? Because he was/is successful without exploiting himself? What conspiracy surrounds Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice, Barack Obama?

How about look up Tom Jones, (here, I’ll give you a start…http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/2002/07/22/326294/index.htm) one of the most wealthy black men in the world who started as a militant. Now, he deals with $700 Billion in assets. Where’s his conspiracy now?

Gangsta Rap is a stain on our society, and you KNOW it. Now, after decades of writing it, listening to it, dancing to it, maybe even living it, you want to turn around and BLAME THE GOV’T!? Give me and the rest of the rational people a break.

Alicia makes a point and the way some people are dogging her is the reason more celebrities don’t open their mouths to talk about more than their album release date, their tour dates, and the new car they have. Some you all really need to read a book and watch some documentaries. Not Krush Groove, not just the “boyz in the hood” movies. The gov’t pumped drugs into the communities which led to the circumstances that Pac lived and that attracted Biggie. They weren’t necessarrily the next black leader but the next leader could’ve come out of that generation instead Al and Jesse have continued to “speak for us” all these years. The stories that Ice T and NWA told were a result of gov’t housing projects, unemployed families, the welfare system which helped to splinter the family structure, drugs, and the black mans history in this country which ultimately led to the subconcious hate of himself. I guess she is getting to deep for some of us. I know that some of what she said was taken out of context by blender. I really doubt that she is saying the gov’t planned Tupac and Biggies deathes, but in an indirect way the gov’t and media led to it. There was no east vs west until white media said there was. We don’t want to talk about conspiracys because it makes us have to admit that the world is fucked up. Alicia being biracial has nothing to do with her right to have an opinion on anything to do with black culture. We all know that in this country in this world if you have one drop of black blood in your body you are BLACK! I advice Alicia to mask her political views in her music which she talks about in this article if you read the entire interview, because I for one love her music. Like she did on the As I Am album in Go Ahead the second verse is actually talking about George Bush and how he lied and needs to go ahead and get the hell outta here! I am not going to bash her for her opinion but I will applaud her for not being afriad to state her opinion.

Irregardless of who created gansta rap and for what purpose, the end result is that black youth are killing each other over the most ridiculous crap ever imagined. Whether it’s art imitating life or life imitating art, same results. Folk are killing each other. Black folk dont own the east coast and black folk dont own the west coast. Is this a stupid fight or what? All you wannabe ganstas…go to Dafur in the Sudan if you wanna be bad. Our folk are being killed in droves there.

WAKE UP wrote on April 15th, 2008 at 4:18 pm

It’s dissappointing to know that our forefathers died for us to come this far just for our own to put ourselves back into slavery. Every time a black person (for example rev Wright) try to reveal what is really going on it is our own black community that criticize and tear them down. I am sure that when Rosa Park refuse to give up her seat their was some dumb black back their telling her to sit her dumb as down and go with the flow because they assumed they were doing ok. but now that she took the blows they are enjoying the battle. Let me just say, don’t thin Alecia is stating that gangsta rap was created by the government, but that it is being promoted by the government to keep blacks killing each other. There are many talented singers with worth while things to say and a voice to go with it but what are we hearing over and over on the radio (sublime message). How many times have you heard music are something you hate, but when you hear it over and over you find your self singing to it and all of a sudden you like it. True talent is not promoted. It is like back in the 70’s when I grew up. At 15 I use to wonder why SuperFly and the Mack, and Shaft was so popular, I hated those movies because they popularized pimps and drug pushers. they even had the pimp of the week on the public radios, and you wonder why there are so many of our black kids today on dope and drugs. Believe you me I grew up in the ghetto and I knew nothing about drugs and I don’t think my friends did either until we were intigrated into the white school system. (Our black kids got a better education with black teachers who cared).
A friend of minds was introduced to drugs through her so called white friends. By the way why did Denzel Washington’s The Great Debaters do so bad at the box office. (because the white promoters sold it before it reached the theaters and put it on a perfectly good bootleg tape, that obviously came from someone working with the production company for it to come out that good. That was a very good movie and it gives black people something to think about. Read up on MR lynch and find out what his statements were and then say the ms Keys is wrong

@WAKE UP - you mention “why did Denzel Washington’s The Great Debaters do so bad at the box office. (because the white promoters sold it before it reached the theaters and put it on a perfectly good bootleg tape, that obviously came from someone working with the production company for it to come out that good.”

Corrct me if I am wrong, but I think you are saying that the promoters of the movie (it was produced by Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions, and distributed by MGM in the USA) intentionally sabotaged how many people would go see the movie, and therefore how much $ it would rake in, by putting out bootleg copies of it that can be bought on the street for $5 a copy? So, let me see…Oprah sabotaged her own movie either because she secretly doesn’t want an uplifting movie about blacks to come out and/or she wants to LOSE money, and MGM (which is owned by Sony Corporation of America and is a publicly owned company, with shareholders) also wanted to LOSE money on the film. I am sure that goes over well at the shareholder meeting and really drives up the value of a share of Sony. “Hey, we lost the company and its investors their money, but it was in a good cause, we kept blacks from going to the theater and instead they will buy a pretty good bootleg which they will watch in their home instead, and we will not make money on it.”

This is a snapshot of why the vast majority of conspiracy theories are ridiculous, if you an ounce of brains in your head. They just don’t make sense if you try to connect the dots.

And that goes for Alicia’s ridiculous comments in Blender as well.

The whole fact that people dismiss anything besides the US Today/NY Times/CNN/FOX version of the story without researching critical events in our history is amazing.

Go research MK-Ultra,Project Artichoke,COINTELPRO,Cinstrike before you dismiss things as being conspiracy.

Hell if anything “Gangsta Rap” is MK-Ultra if I ever saw it.

In regards to Wake Up’s comments regarding the company making “bootlegs” harken back to the movie Dreamgirls when the Gordy clone was busted by his former songwriter and singer. The lawyer stated that he was keeping two sets of books and making bootleg copies to sell in order to keep his artists from getting royalties and keeping it all to himself.

Sounds farfetched and I have not researched that info but I put nothing past crooks and merchants.

RE:2 cents

2 cents bout all you got floatin around up there?

Wow! White people in the rap scene? OH MY! What are we gonna do? They must be there to exploit blacks…and…and make them kill each other…LOL! It’s the damn lyrics white people make performers spit, it infects the mind, see, and turns blacks into murderers…but only of themselves.

So let me get this straight:
Black thug walks down street listening to (insert gangsta track here)
Sees a black target with some fine chains
Follows target to a secluded spot
Confronts target, rips chains off neck, and during struggle, shoots target in the skull
Runs

This is music’s fault…HOW? This is the music industry’s fault…HOW? This is the gov’ts fault(aka white people)…HOW?

Yeah, blame everyone else except for a rotten family structure, a terrible respect for society, an inability to adhere to moral standards…yah. Everyone else’s fault except for the criminal’s. DISGUSTING!

Oh, yeah. I can throw out names and not say anything about them too!

LaBaron Taylor, Sharon Rhone, Suge Knight.

Nuff said.

Nice shoes. They got a sale on red polish over at Rite-Aid.

Its all in how you read music its the heart and soul of some people, yea we can say one genre is bad and one is good music is music. This thing about killin yeah it ain’t right but killin had to be in yo mind before you kill somebody you can be influnced by person, place or thing.

While I think A.Keys is misguided by saying it was “created” by the gov’t, you have to be blind to not notice how it’s been pushed into the fore front. & by proxy, positive, message delivering music has been phased out. Even though the record companies are propogating this agenda & profiting the most from it, the willing participation of Black artists gives the impression that we not only enjoy this facet of music, but crave it. Artists are too eager to participate & the audience is too eager to endulge in it. I get tired of the “puppet master” mentality when it comes to us. Not all of us are mindless, shallow, under educated minions just waiting for our great puppet masters to lead us. Some of us are independent thinkers who see the forrest for the trees. Even though I can’t speak for her, I believe she woulda been better served rewording her statment. But don’t be too eager to dismiss the context in which these statements were made. I understand that in today’s world, people need everything dumbed down to get it, but take a second to marinate on the context of her words.

Am from Kenya and am telling you what Alicia Keys is saying is absolutely true. I think some people just underestimate evils of the white man. What you are all watching right now on CNN and shit about Africans killing each other is a result of the white man. When he came here he used the technique rule and divide. He made sure that black people don’t trust each other. The exact thing that is happening in America. BLACK PEOPLE JUST DON’T TRUST EACH OTHER!!!. That is why there is so much black on black crime everywhere. And by the way if Alicia Keys was here in Kenya, people would see her as a white person coz biracial people in Africa are deemed white.
